Pizza Restaurants in Montreal

Montreal’s pizza scene is refreshingly diverse and nothing like you’d expect. Sure, you’ll find classic Italian spots in Little Italy, but don’t overlook places in Mile End or even the Plateau that put their own spin on it. To me, pizza here isn’t just about tossing dough and cheese together,it’s almost a local ritual.

One of my all-time favorites is Pizzeria NO.900 on Laurier. Their wood-fired pies have this perfect char and depth of flavor which keeps me coming back, even in the chilliest months. And if you’re craving something a bit different, try Pie Sisters downtown, they do killer thin crusts with quality toppings. Just a heads up, some places will have a bit of a wait on weekends, so grab a coffee nearby or stroll before grabbing your slice.

My biggest tip? Try pizza by the slice around Plateau, where you can sample a few places without committing to a whole pie. And don’t shy away from the classics; a well-done margherita here tastes better than almost anywhere else I’ve tried. Montreal’s pizza isn’t flashy, but it’s honest, lively, and usually damn good.

Behind the pizza scenes

I know how tempting it is to just hit the big names on Saint-Laurent, but for pizza, some of the best pies are tucked away in neighborhoods where locals hang out. For example, a place like Pizzeria Napoletana, down on Saint-Denis, often flies under the radar but nails that fresh, chewy dough with classic toppings.

Also, timing wise, go early on a weekend or later on a weekday. Weekend dinners get packed, and you might find yourself waiting in line. Oh, and always keep cash handy, some spots still don’t take cards. Honestly, the wait and minor quirks are part of the charm here. Pizza in Montreal feels like a shared secret, one I’m happy to spill if you ask!

Frequently Asked Questions

Got pizza questions? Here are some local answers you’ll want to know.

If you want variety and quality, Mile End and the Plateau are where you should head. They mix classic Italian with creative toppings, and you can find slices pretty much any time of day. Little Italy is great too, but more traditional. I personally spend a lot of time in Mile End when I want something different.

Yes! Pizzeria Magpie in the Plateau has a solid gluten-free crust and good vegan cheese options. Another one I like is La Pizzathèque in Hochelaga – they’re pretty careful about dietary restrictions and the flavors don’t suffer for it.

You won’t find a singular “Montreal-style” like there is with bagels or smoked meat, but the city’s pizzas often have a slightly thinner crust and focus more on fresh, local toppings. It’s more about having your pie crafted with care rather than a unique style that defines the city.

Definitely. Places like Pizza Bros and some Mile End joints stay open late, especially on weekends. If you’re looking for a quick slice after a night out, hit up Pizza Bros in the Plateau, you won’t regret it.

A few spots do take Neapolitan seriously. Pizzeria Peluso in Rosemont comes close with their dough and cooking style. But I’d say NO.900 and Pizza Il Focolaio also get it right. Just watch the oven temp and you’re golden.

For sure. Most better pizzerias in the city use quality packaging to keep the pizza fresh, but I’d personally avoid delivery after a certain distance if you want your crust crisp. Picking up is often your best bet if you want to eat it right away.

The Plateau has some great spots for grab-and-go slices. Schrödinger’s Pizza is a hidden favorite, and they usually have one or two creative options plus a simple margherita. It’s perfect when you’re wandering and need something fast.
